One “lucky” goldfish that was once small enough to have been flushed down someone’s toilet has achieved epic greatness in Virginia by landing in the record books for being one of the largest goldfish ever caught!

According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources post on Facebook on July 2, Jeremy Fortner from Chesterfield, Virginia, caught the “trophy fish” while angling in Hunting Creek, which is a tributary of the Potomac River, and near the city of Alexandria.

Trophy fishing on average in Virginia pulls up to over 6,000 trophy-size freshwater fish annually. Since 1963 when the program began, their accomplishments are recognized by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries through the Virginia Angler Recognition Program (VARP). As of the last count, around over 250,000 trophy fish awards have been issued.

Jeremy Fortner’s particular catch currently set an official state record when he turned it in on May 22. His catch measured 16 inches, had a girth of nearly 15 inches, and was officially weighed in at 3 pounds, 9 ounces at a Green Top Sporting Goods store in Ashland, Virginia. This made it the largest goldfish ever caught in their state.

There’s one “small” quibble though, goldfish aren’t native to Virginia waters – they’re basically an invasive species – which means it likely entered state waters as a discarded pet. So basically somebody – probably a child – recreated the Finding Nemo scene of flushing their pet down their porcelain throne to give them freedom.
