Some heroes don’t wear capes; they wear dog collars.

Kimber, a search-and-rescue dog, and her Fire and EMS colleagues were called into action when a building collapsed on Thursday in Washington, D.C.

The FEMA-certified, part Belgian Malinois, part German Shepherd dog quickly and accurately descended beneath the rubble and alerted her crew on the position of the trapped survivor so he could be rescued.

The man was trapped under three floors worth of debris, but Kimber had no problem finding him.

Impressively, this was Kimber’s first time locating someone trapped in a collapsed building.

Firefighters used their hands, pry bars, and saws to free him.

Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital once he was freed. He was listed with severe but non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Vito Maggiolo from the D.C. Fire and EMS Department said that Kimber was trained to tell the difference between a deceased or a live scent.
