Prominent S. Carolina lawyer, Alex Murdaugh, 53, who was shot in the head months after the unsolved fatal shootings of his wife and son this summer, is now being accused of paying an assassin to kill him so his other son could gain $10 million of a life insurance policy.
Police confirmed that Murdaugh was shot while fixing a flat tire, which did not cause life-threatening wounds, on September 14.
Richard Harpootlian, Murdaugh’s lawyer, told news agencies that his client was weaning himself off opioids when he came up with the suicide plot.
Harpootlian further elaborated that Murdaugh believed his life insurance policy had a suicide clause, and the scheme was to make sure his child was financially protected.
On September 6, Murdaugh released a public statement revealing that he resigned from his law firm, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick, in order to enter rehab for his opioid addiction.

He is also currently being investigated for ‘misappropriating funds.’
A spokesperson for the law firm, which Murdaugh’s great-grandfather founded, said they plan to do an internal investigation and work with law enforcement and the South Carolina Bar.
The latest events add to a strange situation surrounding the family as questions continue to be raised regarding the fatal shootings of Murdaugh’s wife, Margaret, 52, and their son Paul, 22, in June, three days after Murdaugh’s father, prosecutor Randolph Murdaugh III, had also died.
